San Francisco Bans Sale Of Fur

San Francisco Bans Sale Of Fur

The Board of Supervisors of San Francisco voted on a legislation that will ban the sales of fur in the city. The ban will take effect January 1, 2019. Retailers will have until January 2020 to sell their existing fur products. The ban on fur applies to accessories and clothing items that use real fur.

San Francisco is the third city in California to ban the sale of fur products. The other two cities are West Hollywood and Berkeley. Animal rights advocates praised the city’s decision as a historic victory for animals. They hope other cities in the United States and across the world follow the example made by San Francisco.

Impact on the Economy

While sales of fur are around $40 million annually, the city government doesn’t expect the ban to have a huge impact on the economy. However, retailers are complaining that the new law will greatly affect their ability to make a living. They said that it should have been a public vote instead of just being a decision by the Board of Supervisors.

San Francisco is known to have a strong social conscience that affects local businesses. In 2016, the city government approved the paid parental leave law that requires employers to provide six weeks of paid leave. In June, the voters will consider the banning of menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products in the city.

Aside from prohibiting the sale of fur items, the city also bans the sale of non-rescue dogs and cats from pet stores and performances by exotic animals. Around 50 accessory and clothing retailers will be affected by the ban on fur products. Exempted from the fur ban are vintage and used furs sold by outlets that include pawnshops and secondhand stores.
